The afternoon sun streamed through the window, warming Leo’s face as he reclined on the couch. He’d spent the morning reading, lost in the pages of a well-worn novel. Now, with the book closed in his lap, a sense of deep contentment settled over him. His wife, Clara, had gone to a pottery class, leaving him with the quiet house and the promise of a peaceful afternoon.

He was looking for a recipe she had written down when he found the manuscript. Titled, "The Carpenter's Daughter," it was carefully concealed on her computer, tucked away in a folder labeled "Recipes." The opening line read, "Leo's hands, stained with the wood's deep color..."
